Lose 12 pounds in 12 days! Eat more and lose weight! These are just a couple of the wild diets out there. Who do they think they are kidding? Quite a few of us apparently. We are buying their products and diets. The diet industry makes 30 billion dollars a year on weight loss products. They come in diets, diet pills, meal replacement shakes, de-tox diets and now, even a patch. Do any of them work?

The newest weight loss trend is moving toward natural weight loss pills. They claim to be safe, but many of them have not been tested by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). They claim to decrease your hunger, boost your metabolism and provide all the nutrients your body needs. All products are backed up with testimonials from people who have lost weight using their diet scheme. Some are even promoted by celebrities. Weight loss advertising lures us in to try what they are selling because we want to lose weight badly and the faster the better.

Fast weight loss is dangerous. Any diet that is less than 1200 calories per day is not healthy. Even 1200 calories is low to feel satisfied and to stick to the diet. The only people that should ever be on a severely low calorie diet are those whom their physician has prescribed and will monitor closely. When our body does not get enough nutrients, it goes into a starvation mode.

There is a certain amount of stigma surrounding overweight people, especially if you are obese. This can contribute to low self esteem. We all want answers to our weight loss problem. Promises of fast weight loss are very tempting. Some people desperately want to lose weight and will try anything. Fast weight loss diets claim to help you lose an extraordinary amount of weight in a short time.

The problem with dropping pounds quickly is that all you are losing is water weight. As soon as you resume your normal diet, you will gain it right back. When our body does not get enough nutrients, it goes into a starvation mode. It pulls glycogen from your body’s storage for energy. First, you lose the water weight and then, instead of losing fat, your can lose muscle tissue.

The acute side effects of these fad diets are fatigue, depression, dehydration, vitamins and mineral deficiencies, diarrhea or constipation, and electrolyte imbalances. Long term fat weight loss dieters or yoyo dieters can develop eating disorders, osteoporosis, kidney and liver damage. The safest and healthiest way to lose weight is to lose one to two pounds a week. This will get the weight off and keep it off. You can learn a healthy way of eating, including all the food groups. You will feel satisfied and less likely to ditch the diet.

Avoid fast weight loss diets. Do not succumb to their advertising. Find a healthy diet that will teach you how to eat well for a lifetime. Include exercise at least three times a week, and you are on your way to permanent weight loss.
